I-bank intern writes drama-filled diary

Think you had a hard day? A summer intern at a leading investment bank in Asia is exposing what life is really like for the lowest of the low on the banking ladder.

You can read can a week-by-week diary from our intrepid intern by visiting the eFinancialCareers Student Centre.

The diary features tears:

“All I can say is I am glad that week 2 is over. I was in every morning by 6.15 and I don't think I got to bed before midnight even once. By Thursday evening I was so tired that I started randomly crying on my way home.”

Tensions:

“The most stressful part of my day is the morning coffee run. Something seems to go wrong with someone's order every day and it creates a tense environment.”

And tellings-off:

“I got told off pretty badly this week over a misunderstanding. I was singled out in front of a group of people and, rather than clarify the situation first, the person just decided to yell. I had no idea what they were on about so I pretty much told them as much.”

If this sounds all too familiar, make sure to keep up with the diary as the internship continues.

Unfortunately, you end up in a super unprofessional team.  Many of our interns are having a good time in our investment bank, and we try our best to make their stay enjoyable by showing them what we do and motivating (not coercing) them with tasks which are mind-stimulating.

Your employer is probably not sincere about making you a permanent offer - that's my guess.  They choose to show you their ugliest face, and just take a short-term view of employing some summer assistants for their coffee round.  Then again, perhaps they don't see a future for their own business either...

Agree...probably not a good sign for long term employment in the bank as well.
